The History of Common Short Codes in the USA
Cross-carrier Common Short Codes (CSCs) were launched
in the USA in October of 2003. Unwired Appeal immediately
began the process of securing Short Codes for SMS applications
and services through the Common Short Code Administration
(run by Neustar), the administrative body that assigns
Short Codes in the USA..
A Short Code is nothing more than a 5 or 6-digit number that
is used for routing text-messages (SMSs) sent by wireless
subscribers to mobile applications and services (typically
referred to as Application-to-Person or A2P communications).
Wireless carriers route the messages through the intercarrier
SMPP network to the network address assigned to the
Short Code.
Currently all Tier-1 wireless carriers support
Short Codes along with many Tier-2/3 carriers. Over
95% of USA wireless subscribers are able to send messages
to Short Codes and thus take advantage of SMS applications
and services.
Shared Short Codes Service
Provisioning a dedicated Short Code takes substantial
time, technical expertise, and an ongoing financial
commitment. Unwired Appeal's Shared Short Code System
removes many of these barriers to entry by allowing
customers to run applications and services on Unwired
Appeal's pre-provisioned Short Codes at a fraction of
the cost of setting up a dedicated Short Code and intercarrier
connection.
Unwired Appeal's Rapid Application
Deployment ™ (RAD) platform employs an intelligent
keyword-routing system and secure HTTP API that allows
customers to both send and receive SMS messages with
the speed and reliability of direct intercarrier connections.
Advanced features include the ability to automatically
handle opt-in/out requirements, create sub-keyword routing,
and establish "sticky sessions" with wireless
subscribers.
Dedicated Short Codes
At times customers require a dedicated Short Code for
an individual SMS promotion or service. This is often
the case of Short Codes secured for "branding" or recognition
purposes like 92466 for YAHOO.
It is also possible that due to the specific nature
of an application, initial keyword-routing is not an
optimal technique for routing incoming traffic.
In these cases, Unwired Appeal can provision a Dedicated
Short Code on the intercarrier network and connect the
Short Code to all major carriers.. Unwired Appeal provisions
Short Codes for all types of events and services and
can expedite all aspects of the application and provisioning
process with the wireless carriers.
